Reimagining BMW's R18

Classic Meets Modern in an 1800cc Custom Marvel

When BMW introduced its large-displacement air-cooled R18 engine, the excitement in the motorcycle community was palpable. With roots tracing back to the 1937 BMW R5, this bike exuded classic appeal and modern craftsmanship. However, when the production model finally arrived, some found its weight—a hefty 850 lbs—challenging. Once moving, it performed admirably, but the slow speeds required caution.

Fuller Moto was thrilled at the opportunity to rework this retro-modern cruiser. Their project aimed to strip down the R18 to its essence, showcasing clean lines and removing 250 lbs of electronics, sensors, and weighty components. This was no easy task: extensive modifications to remove the direct injection fuel system and a redesign of parts under the seat made it a complex endeavor.

Drawing inspiration from Nigel’s chopper (known for its Morris Magneto ignition), Fuller Moto collaborated with Morris' new owners to bring Magneto ignition to the R18. This gave the custom bike a more vintage ignition system while retaining a modern feel. They integrated state-of-the-art Smart Carbs, fabricated custom aluminum intakes, and repurposed a 3D scan of the engine to create components that perfectly fit the bike's aesthetic.

The wheels were upsized to 23 inches using steel rims, with custom spokes and hubs sourced from BMW's original designs. To fit these, the swing-arm was extended, and FOX shocks replaced the originals. Finishing touches included a refurbished R53 fuel tank, trimmed to fit the frame, and repurposed original fender blanks—reflecting the iconic look of the R5.

In every part of this custom build, the balance of modern performance and classic style was at the forefront. Using a gutted and reimagined R18 headlight, TIG-welded fender brackets, and a single-stage black paint job with silver leaf accents, the final result—dubbed "Dolly"—was an ode to BMW’s history blended with a touch of modern flair. Debuted at the Buffalo Chip's exhibition at Sturgis, Dolly captures the spirit of classic motorcycling while being fully equipped for the road ahead.

This bike lives up to the dream—a true blend of comfort, classic aesthetics, and modern power for anyone seeking freedom on two wheels.
